This study is in response to the need of industry to withdraw water from lakes to build ice roads in support of the Mackenzie Delta Pipeline project. The use of SAR to determine if lakes freeze to the bottom is important information for this application. Fish do not live in lakes that completely freeze to the bottom and therefore water withdrawal is not an issue in these cases. The location of the floating ice is also useful from the perspective of determining where fish may be located. The product developed will include a bottomfast contour (a linear interpretation of the frozen ice extent on the SAR imagery).
River Ice – Canada – Nelson River Manitoba
The river ice service will monitor ice break-up and provide annotated/classified products showing the ice front on the river. The requirement for river ice in Canada and Finland is to identify the build up ice on rivers, the location of jams, and the extent of water coverage. The turnaround time for river ice applications is less than 24 hours where riverside communities are affected. In more remote areas, the turnaround is more for hind cast analysis except in the cases where ice impacts hydropower regulation.
